You don’t have to buy all new plants for your planters when Christmas approaches. If your current plants are still going strong, (if not, read this post) then use those plants as a base for some wintery add-ins that will refresh your planters for Christmas.
Save Money Using your Existing Plants as a Base
In October, I completely refreshed our front porch planters with shades of green and autumn-colored mums (which have since stopped blooming).
In the rear, I have Creeping Jenny, which I transplanted from our last house. Creeping Jenny is quite invasive, so I highly recommend keeping it in pots and throwing away any clippings. In the middle, I used a small arborvitae and Glacier Ivy, Dusty Miller and more dormant chrysanthemums up front.
Since my existing plants are still thriving (thanks in part to the drip irrigation system I installed), I decided to spruce them up with fresh Nandina bush berries and mini pine cones that I foraged from a friend’s yard. All I did was stick the stems into the dirt. Doesn’t it make such a difference? And the best part? The refresh was free!
If you don’t know what Nandina bushes look like in the landscape, I took these two photo while I was out foraging for evergreen decor.
I found these rectangular metal planters at the curb a few years ago, actually. They’re in great shape, so I scooped them up and brought them home! If you are looking for something similar, these might work for you.
I hope this quick tutorial helps you refresh your front porch planters for Christmas! It just takes a little planning and effort to turn what you have into a festive display.
