The first time I tasted lavender simple syrup was in iced black tea at a local coffee shop. It was a hot day and since I love the smell of lavender, I thought that lavender simple syrup sounded very refreshing. After some research, I made my own lavender simple syrup recipe. What makes my recipe unique is that it’s strong and really packs the flavor of lavender.
Steps to Make Lavender Simple Syrup
This recipe is really easy to remember because it uses a 1:1 ratio of water to sugar, plus 1 tablespoon of dried lavender buds. Just like any spice, using dried lavender is going to result in a much stronger flavor than if you use fresh. I really do not recommend using fresh lavender buds here because the flavor will be weak.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated white sugar (or sweetener of choice – taste will vary)
- 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds (if you didn’t grow any, buy some here)
- Combine water, sugar, and lavender in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and stir until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let syrup steep for about 30 minutes.
- Use a food-grade metal funnel with strainer to pour syrup into a sterilized glass jar or bottle. Leave the top off to cool, then cap and refrigerate for up to one month.
Tip: use a permanent marker to write the date made or expiration date on the bottom or side of the jar. Easily remove the date and reuse the bottle with a swipe of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel or cotton ball.
How to Use Lavender Simple Syrup
- Give as a gift! Pour lavender simple syrup into a slim glass bottle with a top or cork, tie a ribbon around the bottle neck and attach a note or usage instructions.
- On a warm day, brew a batch of iced black tea and stir in 2 teaspoons of lavender simple syrup (or to taste).
- In the winter, add 2 teaspoons of lavender simple syrup (or to taste) to your favorite milk latte.
